And those peers nigh on always come off worse. But for how much longer? The 3 Series faces a not completely certain future as electrification takes an ever-bigger grip on its heritage. Do you want a fully electric 3? It’s currently called a BMW i4. So, best to savour this 7th-generation ‘G20’ BMW 3 Series for as much as you can, just in case. With both cars featuring a host of styling and technology updates, the only hard choice left is to decide between the new BMW 5 Series sedan or BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo fastback.


On the topic of dynamics, one feature stands out in the options list that would be of immense interest to keen drivers: a limited-slip differential, which helps with traction when powering out of corners, as well as makes the car easier to drift. This is only in conjunction with the Adaptive M Suspension, which is standard fitment on the 430i M Sport Pro; it’s not currently clear if this can be optioned on the 420i as well (it gets fixed-rate M Sport suspension instead).

But to me, this ‘middle-class’ fast SUV is already hot enough. For starters, it features a tuned B58 unit, a turbocharged 3.0 liter inline-six engine already found in the M240i. It’s an open rumour that the eventual king-of-the-hill X3 M (if it does go into production) will have an enhanced version of this power-plant.

Asia’s hottest one-make race series blazes into its 5th season with a brand new car, the 2nd gen R8 LMS. We catch up with the series in Sepang, Malaysia.


One of the few sedans that you can get with rear-wheel drive, the new 3 Series has its old four-cylinder motor replaced by the same 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine found in the latest MINI Cooper. With a decent 136 bhp and 220 Nm at 4300 rpm there is virtually no change in the performance figures compared to the model it replaces. With the new engine however, the entry-level 3 Series is now up to 12 percent more efficient.

Big is good for some… err, we’re talking about engines here. But BMW proves that in reality, a medium- sized turbodiesel with refinement is all you need


The transmission, although shifting smoothly, somewhat has the tendency to shift up earlier than expected even in Sport mode. Thankfully BMW made paddle-shifters a standard fixture here, which allows you to manually pick your own gears. While at that, the car is willing to stretch all the way to its 7,000 rpm redline; however, it does feel flat past 5,000 rpm.

The rear seats have 21 millimetres more legroom, and the luggage compartment has expanded by 30 litres to 360 litres.
